You have written the next bestseller, or so you think, but what should you title your project? A name can make or break a novel. If you’ve written a sci-fi fantasy with no romance yet give it a name similar to a romance novel, then you have misrepresented your book, which in turn will draw in the wrong audience, who will more than likely not be interested in your book. When naming your project, you will need to think about these key things:
- Who is your target audience?
- What is your book’s genre?
- What is your book about? (if you need to write a synopsis to sum it all up)
- What are you trying to get across?
- Why you? Why this story?
These may seem like simple questions to answer, but once you dive deep into the core value of your novel, it will be much easier to name.
When thinking of a title you want something that:
- Catches your audiences interest.
- Makes your audience wonder what your book is about.
- Has an impact.
- Not complicated but simple.
- Less then 5 words.
Now here are a few things you should do before you pick a title:
- Brainstorm: What is your book about? Any major characters or new worlds?
- Research: Make sure your title is not already in use. (especially not in your genre)
- When in doubt take a vote: Ask your followers or friends to help you narrow down the search.
The Takeaway: When picking a title, take your time, don’t rush things and, always, always research to see if your title is already in use.
